In 2016 I was riding through Vietnam on a motorbike, doing the classic backpacker loop with everything strapped to a Honda. In Da Nang a hotel scammed us. When the owners shoved my travel companion, the argument stopped being about money.
The hotel reported us to the police. Standing there, I genuinely wondered whether I would be allowed to leave the country. The beach with the thúng chai basket boats looks peaceful in the photos. That trip was anything but.
