Lost in the Peruvian Mountains

In 2015 I was volunteering in the mountains of Peru with AIESEC, traveling with my Dutch friend Loes. One day we lost our way. Night fell before we found a village, so we improvised a camp under a mosquito net, rocks for anchors, sleeping bags on the dirt.
We woke to farm workers with machetes. They were not happy to find strangers on their land. We bribed our way out, found the trail again, and still had nowhere to sleep, so we spent the next night in a police station.
The same trip had a softer chapter. While volunteering, I ended up in a full Mickey Mouse costume at a birthday party for a kid with a disability, kneeling in a room full of balloons and trying to make his afternoon special.
